Tencent is considering the acquisition of game company Nexon
Tencent, the Chinese technology company, is considering the possibility of acquiring Nexon, the game developer famous for the MapleStory series. Representatives from Tencent have contacted the family of Nexon founder Kim Jung-ju, but no specific agreement has been reached yet.
Nexon integrated blockchain technology into MapleStory N and MapleStory Universe in May 2025, allowing players to collect items in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFT).
According to a report from DappRadar, blockchain gaming activity increased by 368% compared to the previous year in January 2025, thanks to titles like Off The Grid. However, despite the interest, Web3 gaming activity has decreased by 10% due to technical barriers and the reluctance of the traditional gaming community towards play-to-earn games.
