China uses AI deepfake Taiwan military exercises, councilors have been coerced to say "If the People's Liberation Army attacks, it's Capitulation"
Since President Lai Ching-te listed China as a 'hostile force,' China has been stepping up cognitive warfare and attacks. Recently, China has been using AI deep fake content to create fake content based on Taiwan's military exercise videos and political talk show clips, and spreading them widely on the platform. In response, Taiwan's fact-checking center has called on the public to cooperate with the government to combat fake content.
Video of a fallen soldier goes viral, but it's actually an AI fake video
In March of this year, a video of President Lai Ching-te inspecting a military exercise went viral on the platform. In the video, a soldier fell down, but the senior officers and non-commissioned officers around him remained indifferent, triggering criticism from netizens for 'seeing death but not rescuing'. However, after restoring and reversing the video, it was found that the soldier was actually just squatting down to place his weapon and not fainting.
Over 2 million pieces of holiday information were sent throughout the year, and the government suffers hundreds of hacker attacks every day.
According to the statistics of the Taiwan National Security Bureau, just last year, Taiwan alone had more than 2 million pieces of fake news, the vast majority of which came from China's information warfare. In addition to fake news, Taiwan government websites also have to endure an average of 240 hacker attacks per day, twice as many as the year before.
The councilor was spoofed into 'surrendering,' when in fact he never said that.
The Taiwan Fact-Checking Center also cited another case. A Taiwanese city councilor's appearance on a political talk show last October was AI-altered and widely circulated. In the video, his mouth movements were synchronized with the voice, claiming that 'the Chinese People's Liberation Army can land in Taiwan in 3 minutes, and I surrender directly'.
And the timing of the release of this AI-generated fake video coincided with a large-scale military exercise conducted by China in the Taiwan Strait. In fact, the congressman has a military background and a strong stance, leading many to believe he was deliberately targeted by China.
The increasing AI attacks in China require close cooperation between the Taiwanese government and the people
Chinese hackers, previously known as Crazy Hunter (Crazy Hunter), have been systematically attacking hospitals across Taiwan since February this year. Nearly 16.6 million pieces of patient information have been leaked, affecting institutions including Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Tamsui, Hsinchu, and Taitung, as well as children's hospitals in Taipei and Hsinchu. The hackers even demanded a ransom as high as 1.5 million US dollars. The government and private sector immediately set up emergency hotlines and held response meetings.
Experts say the current cyber security battle has entered the era of AI versus AI, with models like DeepSeek, a generative AI model released by China in January this year, potentially leveraging vast amounts of global cyber security data to pose a massive threat to security systems worldwide. Experts further warn: 'It's not a matter of waiting for an attack, but of being constantly aware that an attack may be underway. Governments must closely cooperate with the public to counter the growing threats from China.'
