U.S. Congressman Steil urges lawmakers not to add unrelated provisions to the encryption bill.
Gate News bot news, U.S. Congressman Bryan Steil calls on lawmakers to stop adding "unrelated provisions" to two key Crypto Assets bills, stating that doing so would slow down the deployment of the industry's regulatory framework.
Steil stated at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas on May 27: "When people see impending legislation, they always want to add unrelated provisions to any bill that is about to be passed and signed into law." Steil serves as the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee's cryptocurrency subcommittee.
"We must restrain this instinct and impulse," he added.
Cryptocurrency supporters in Congress hope to pass the "Guidance and Establishment of a National Stablecoin Innovation Act" (referred to as the GENIUS Act) regulating stablecoins and a cryptocurrency market structure bill before the month-long August recess.
Democratic lawmakers withdrew their support for the GENIUS Act on May 8, citing concerns that President Trump's crypto assets investments might conflict with his presidential duties.
Although the bill ultimately passed a procedural vote in the Senate on May 20, Steil stated that concerns related to Trump are unrelated to the bill itself, "The focus of the legislative text is to establish a regulatory framework so that we can take action to strengthen this broader market, especially benefiting American consumers and innovation and development in the United States."
