On April 10, according to CNBC, U.S. President Donald Trump hopes to avoid pushing the economy into a recession through his controversial tariff plan.
Trump said privately that he was aware that the broad and draconian tariff plan released last week could push the U.S. economy into a recession, but that he did not want to trigger a depression, according to people familiar with the matter.
Trump also told his advisers that he is willing to accept the "pain" caused by the policies.
Economists believe that a depression occurs when a recession becomes more severe, accompanied by higher unemployment rates and longer periods of economic stagnation. Since the Great Depression of the 1930s, the United States has avoided the occurrence of a depression through advancements in monetary and fiscal policy, as well as programs like the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) deposit insurance. At that time, the unemployment rate reached 25%.
