Expressions worth sticking to beyond that traffic
"Sitting alone with plain paper facing the empty mountains, the pen is cold and the lamp is dim, the night is not yet over. Do not say that literature is without practical use; the spirit and essence of a thousand autumns lie within it."
In both Chinese and English, there are three words that generally refer to a similar type of person, but I have my own preferences.
KOL (Key Opinion Leader) has been somewhat overused. If someone comes up and says they are a KOL, I generally wave my hand and shake my head, definitely not acknowledging it. It’s like the "Holy Roman Empire" — neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire. Many of the so-called "key opinion leaders" today are neither key, nor opinions, nor leaders; they merely have the name. Many who claim to be KOLs are actually just good at riding the hype, selling emotions, and creating divisions, with opinions that change with the wind and content that lacks depth and judgment.
Influencer sounds like a profession, where the core of the job is to "influence others." This type of role is more like a link in the advertising communication chain, with tasks, KPIs, and product promotion pathways. I am in charge of business, responsible for building systems, negotiating collaborations, and assessing benefits. The essence of what I say has no direct connection to whether I have "influence." Having a positive impact is certainly good, but influence is not the goal, just a result. The Chinese translation "网红" is even more bizarre. I spend half my time offline: giving speeches, meeting people, interacting— that "网" character almost completely excludes my main activity field (not to mention that I am not "popular").
Content Creator is the term I can accept the most, and it sounds the most neutral. I create content because I really want to say something. I write articles online and speeches offline, never relying on others, not using a ghostwriter, not copying templates, and not posting cookie-cutter graphics and text. Whether what I write has an impact or resonates with others, I never set goals or overly care about it. Content is not the KPI of my work, it is just the way I choose to express the world.
What I want Gate Square to achieve is not to create a content square that only features KOLs and influencers. What we really want to build is a "co-creation community": where no one is superior to others, and everyone can participate. If you are a Gate user, and you have experiences, thoughts on features or products that you can express in writing, speaking, or drawing, then you are the core of the Gate Square community. We do not require you to have hundreds of thousands of followers, nor do we ask you to edit videos, chase views, or compete for SEO; as long as you can share genuine experiences, we welcome you to be one of the voices here.
If you are exactly that kind of person, the gates of the square will always be open for you. The next goal is not to create an account with the most fans, but to be the one who can take a group of people to truly understand the product and make real money. Not a traffic leader, but an efficiency leader; not someone who speaks loudly, but someone who helps themselves and those around them truly understand and earn steadily.
What you write in the square may not be trending right now, but it could become the most valuable footnote in the next bull market.
