Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin: L1 Transition To L2 Is The Key To Elevating The Game
Jason Chaskin, head of app relations and research at the Ethereum (ETH) Foundation, stated that most Layer-1 (L1) alts will eventually turn into L2s on the Ethereum network. His statement underscores the bloated number of L1s and the fact that for most of them to survive, they must learn to integrate with a more established chain.
Particularly, they must assimilate as an L2 solution within Ethereum to shave down cost, enhance scalability, and ensure optimum performance. Chaskin believes that the most extensive network for decentralized applications (dApps) and robust infrastructure has the necessary infrastructure for their transition and security.
Celo’s Transition From L1 to L2
Chaskin used Celo (CELO) as an example to drive his point. He said the move enabled the carbon-negative, permissionless, blockchain to halve its inflation from 2% to 1%. Additionally, it reduced the network’s block times from 5 seconds to 1 second and has helped eliminate bloating in the system by removing over 300K lines of legacy code.
ADVERTISEMENTMoreover, the transformation allows Celo to leverage Ethereum’s ecosystem. This expands its reach into a vast developer community and increases its interoperability with other networks.
Celo’s evolution into an L2 also aligns with its environmental targets. It has cut the chain’s carbon emissions by half.
Overall, he emphasized that it’s a better model.
ADVERTISEMENT## Vitalik Buterin Agrees
Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, expressed his approval on Chaskin’s recommendation. According to the Canadian programmer, L1s present the best infrastructure for building L2s as the base layer is already equipped with a high level of security, censorship resistance, data availability, and proofs.
Furthermore, the process simplifies the logic of the core execution to just being a sequencer and a prover. If based, it would only focus on being a prover.
Buterin highlighted that the combination of trust minimalization and efficiency was what they envisioned for Ethereum. It’s only now that their goal is coming into fruition, thanks to the arrival of L2s.
Buterin and Chaskin’s remarks mirror the ongoing shift of various blockchain networks, especially legacy L1s, to ensure their survivability amid the tighter market competition. It also reflects how legacy L1s are working on ways to pave the way for more collaboration in addressing more pressing and evolving user demands while accelerating interoperability instead of trying to eliminate each other or competing for complete dominance.
