Historic Agreement between SEC and Cryptocurrency Companies: Over 4 Billion Dollars! - Coin Bulletin
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reached an agreement with a bankrupt cryptocurrency company.
The developer of TerraUSD and Luna tokens, Terraform Labs, has reached a settlement with the SEC following allegations.
Will pay billions of dollars
It has been decided that Terraform Labs defrauded investors out of approximately 40 billion dollars in 2022 when TerraUSD and Luna tokens collapsed.
The final decision regarding Terraform and the company's founder Do Kwon was announced in court the other day. It still needs to be approved by District Judge Jed Rakoff.
According to the decision, Terraform will have to transfer $4.05 billion of benefits and pay a $420 million fine.
In addition to a total of 4.55 billion dollars in fines, Kwon was also ordered to pay a 80 million dollars fine.
Can they pay the fine?
According to Reuters, it does not seem likely that Terraform will be able to pay the majority of these fines. Terraform entered the liquidation process after filing for bankruptcy.
SEC, "The implementation of this decision will ensure maximum repayment to the affected investors and permanently terminate Terraform's operations."
SEC had filed a lawsuit against Terraform, alleging that the so-called stablecoin's stability in TerraUSD had deceived investors.
Terraform and Kwon did not object to the decision made about themselves.
