Aya Miyaguchi, Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, announced that she will be stepping down from her seven-year role to become the new president of the foundation.

Aya Miyaguchi, who has been serving as the executive director of the Ethereum Foundation since 2018, announced that she will 'be promoted' to the presidency as part of the changes in the foundation's leadership structure. Miyaguchi's decision is said to have come, especially after increasing criticisms in the Ethereum community.

(# Leadership change and Vitalik Buterin's statements

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, praised the contributions of Miyaguchi's leadership in the Ethereum network, such as the hard forks, Devcon events, and the preservation of Ethereum culture, during his speech at the X platform. Buterin said, "Every success of the EF is a result of Aya's leadership." However, Buterin also emphasized that more fundamental changes in the leadership structure are on the way.

Within the community, there has been a slow movement, especially regarding Ethereum's scalability solutions, and criticism towards Miyaguchi due to lack of transparency has attracted attention. Miyaguchi's rejection of the 'culture of competition and winning' in an interview with WIRED has also caused dissatisfaction in some quarters.

)# New presidency duty and future plans

Miyaguchi stated that she will continue to strengthen the Ethereum Foundation's corporate relations and support community development along with the presidency. In her blog post, she used the expression "This new opportunity will allow EF to bring its vision and culture to a wider audience".

It is not yet clear who will be the new executive director of the Ethereum Foundation. In particular, the name of former EF researcher Danny Ryan, who led Ethereum's proof-of-stake transition, is emerging as the prominent new leader.

The Ethereum Foundation has previously been criticized within the community for its lack of transparency and complex structure. In response to criticism that the foundation only engages in on-chain interactions to provide funding, Vitalik Buterin had invested approximately 50,000 Ethereum, equivalent to around $80 million, in Aave, Compound, and Spark platforms.

During Miyaguchi's presidency, it is eagerly awaited how the foundation will be able to interact more with the community and how the new leadership structure will take shape.
