[Trump to raise tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35%] The White House stated that President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to raise tariffs on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement from 25% to 35%. According to a White House briefing, goods rerouted to another country to evade the new tariffs will be subject to a 40% transshipment tax. The White House indicated that the increase in tariffs is a result of Canada’s "ongoing inaction and retaliation." Previously, Trump told reporters that Canadian Prime Minister Carney had proactively reached out before the August 1 deadline for the tariffs, but there had been no dialogue between the two. U.S. Commerce Secretary Ross had previously stated that if Carney "begins to take a more friendly approach and stops retaliatory actions," Trump may reconsider the tariff policy. ( Jin10 )
