Gate News bot reported that, according to Bloomberg, former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak successfully overturned another lawsuit involving the troubled state fund 1MDB, marking a rare victory for the imprisoned politician.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court has acquitted Najib of three money laundering charges involving SRC International Sdn Bhd (a former subsidiary of 1MDB), which is a form of probation but does not equate to a release from guilt. The dismissal of the charges leaves room for the prosecution to bring the same charges in the future.
High Court Judge K. Muniyandi ruled that the case has been delayed for a long time due to the deputy prosecutor's lack of readiness for the hearing. He informed the court that the most appropriate course of action is to release the defendant rather than grant him an acquittal.
"Once the defendant is charged in court, the accusation cannot remain indefinitely unresolved," Muniandi said. "Doing so is both harsh and illegal."
Previously, Najib decided in March 2023 to dismiss another charge related to 1MDB. Najib will continue to serve his sentence due to another corruption charge related to the national fund. His sentence was reduced to six years due to royal intervention last year, which sparked criticism of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's government.
Najib had applied to have the money laundering charges brought against him in 2019 dismissed in 2023, which is one of the many trials he faces due to 1MDB. The state fund was established during his tenure as Prime Minister and became the focus of scandals that triggered investigations in Asia, the United States, and Europe. He has consistently maintained his innocence.
